LG Display has achieved a significant milestone in display technology with the introduction of the world's first stretchable display capable of expanding up to 50%. This innovative screen, unveiled at LG Science Park in Seoul, represents a major leap forward in free-form display technology.

Key Features

12-inch screen expandable to 18 inches

High resolution of 100 pixels per inch (ppi)

Full RGB color support

Durability to withstand over 10,000 stretches

Technological Advancements

The new prototype showcases remarkable improvements over its 2022 predecessor, which could only stretch by 20%. LG Display achieved this breakthrough by enhancing the properties of a specialized silicon substrate similar to that used in contact lenses.

They also developed a new wiring design to minimize physical stress during stretching,

as well as utilising micro-LED light sources up to 40 micro metres in size for improved durability

Potential Applications

The stretchable display's versatility opens up numerous possibilities across various industries:

Fashion and wearables: Integrating displays into clothing and accessories

Automotive: Creating adaptive, tactile control panels

Emergency services: Providing real-time information on firefighters' uniforms

Industry Impact

This development is part of a larger national project involving 19 domestic industry and research institutes. By successfully completing this project, LG Display has secured core technologies for the next-generation display market.
